Mofesomo Tayo-Oyetibo, SAN, is a Partner at the leading Nigerian law firm of Tayo Oyetibo LP, where he heads the Firm’s Arbitration and Commercial Litigation practice. He is a graduate of the University of Leeds and holds a Masters’ Degree in Commercial Law from the University of Bristol. The Learned Silk is a leading expert in commercial disputes resolution, and he has invaluable experience in the arbitration and litigation of a wide range of domestic and international disputes covering banking, commercial crime, contracts, corporate insolvency, marine and general insurance, securities, shipping and international trade and oil and gas. His work also includes providing legal advisory services to clients on their entry into the Nigerian market or ongoing operations in-country. He has provided expert evidence on Nigerian law in foreign proceedings.
He was a member of the consortium of Nigerian counsel that advised and represented the Federal Government of Nigeria to set aside an arbitral award of $6.6 billion, rising to more than $11 billion after interest, which was the largest ever award made against Nigeria.
Learned Silk has written on arbitration, commercial law and public interests matters and his writing is regularly published. He completed the Leading Professional Service Firms course at the Harvard Business School and is an alumnus of the Institute of Maritime Law at the University of Southampton. He is a member of several professional bodies, such as the Nigerian Bar Association, Institute of Directors, International Council for Commercial Arbitration, Institute for Transnational Arbitration, Lagos Court of Arbitration and the International Law Association, where he Chairs the Committee on International Law and New Technologies.
He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitration (UK) and Prime Disputes and is on the Panel of Neutrals of the Nigerian Communications Commission and World Intellectual Property Organization. He also sits on the Board of Governors of Dowen College, Lagos, the Advisory Board of the Lagos Court of Arbitrators - Young Arbitrators Network and Management Board of Pistis Life and Leadership Institute in Lagos. In 2023, he was recognized by The Legal 500, an international legal research and ranking body, for his work in the area of dispute resolution.
